Information for care homes
NHS eyecare provider
At Freedom Eyecare Nottingham we can provide eye tests for any care home resident, residential or nursing. Anyone over 60 is entitled to a free eye test at their place of residence if they are unable to get out to an optician on their own. See our NHS page to see who else is entitled.
We engrave the inside arm of residents glasses with their name in case they get moved around the home or get picked up by another resident. This is something we offer regardless of whether we provided the glasses or not. We have a portable engraver so we can schedule a day to come and do this at your convenience without having to send glasses away.
We offer free low vision assessments for patients who struggle to see with glasses. Often patients who are registered as blind or partially sighted can still achieve usable vision with the help of magnifying glasses. These can be purchased privately or a referral to the hospital for free magnifiers can be arranged.
Free anti scratch coating
We are able to offer all patients a free anti scratch coatings on any glasses they buy if you choose Freedom Eyecare Nottingham as your homes eyecare provider. Complete glasses start from £49 for private patients and from free for anyone in receipt of pension credit guaranteed.
We offer two types of training exclusively for care homes. The first is a session on British Sign Language (BSL) which we can do as an activity for residents or as a training session for staff, or both. BSL is so useful in helping residents who are hard of hearing, deaf or those who are unable to communicate verbally in order to make choices and feel included. It is also a fun activity that everyone can get involved with.
The second training session is about eye conditions which tend to affect older people and how they might impact on residents day to day lives. Included in this session is a section about different types of glasses and when they should and shouldn't be worn. Also about the urgency of different complaints from your residents.
Free hearing screening is available to all residents. We offer hearing devices that can be tried out and purchased the same day. Often NHS hearing tests require months of waiting for appointments and trips to the hospital. Our devices can make a massive improvement to people with a wide range of hearing loss. We can also provide a device which connects to the TV and amplifies sound wirelessly to individual residents.
On the day you will always be given exact arrival times which will have been discussed prior to the visit. Patients will be seen individually with as little distraction as possible. You and your residents will always see the same optician for their eye test, choosing glasses, delivery and fitting of glasses and any repairs or adjustments.
